Component Types

Introduction

Component Types are an important element of the AwardPro Infrastructure. They allocate work to departments, set up department cost centre feeds and help you search for components by type.

AwardPro comes with a default set of component types which you can change to suit your own needs.

Warning:

Many of the component types already listed have already been assigned to pre-installed components. If you delete a component type you will not delete the component. However the great listing of components feature becomes less effective.

* We recommend not deleting component Types until you have become very familiar with the program features.

By all means create new ones and start assigning components to them.

You do not have to allocate components to specific departments if you do not wish to have departmental dissections. However the program has been created to allow you to really define your business into cost centres so that you can get valuable reports showing how different departments contribute to your overall business profitability.

Department Work Assignment

Different Components are used in different departments. It is recommended that you read the Department explanation so you are familiar with how departments work. Your departments get a list of jobs that they are involved in and component types are one of the ways in which work gets assigned to departments. So when you create a product with components and then add the product to a sales order the complementary in the product associates with Department work scheduling. This also happens when you add a component directly to a sales as a line item.

So Component Types associated to components being used in a job help construct the Department work Schedules.

Processes also get assigned to departments and contribute to Department Work Schedules.

Lets look at an example of Department Work Assignment

A Sublimation Printed Plaque shown in the Product Editor

This is made up of:

Components:

19706 Plaque - Assembly department

Sub Ink - Art department

Sublimation Plate - Sublimation department

Processes:

Artwork Typesetting - Artwork

Sub Printing - Sublimation

The department allocation is:

Artwork - Typesetting and Sub Ink

Sublimation - Sub Plate and Sub Printing process

Assembly - Plaque

So these three departments get the job added to their work schedule list. But they also get the costs and sales allocated to them as well.

Department Cost Allocation

By assigning different components to different departments you can then track the cost, sales and profits of each department. Assigning Glass Trophies and Blasting Resist to the Sand Blasting Department means that the costs, sales and profits get allocated to that department. You can set up your own structure of Departments and create your own allocations and you can make it simple or intricate, it's entirely up to you.

Department cost allocation works in exactly the same way as the Work Assignment. Using the Sublimation Plaque sample above we can look at how costs and profits get allocated.

Assembly Department: They get the cost and mark up value of the blank plaque.

Sublimation Department: They get a cost and mark up value of the sub plate and they get the charge value of the sublimation printing process.

Art department: They get the type setting charge allocated to them.

So each department gets a slice of the pie.

You may choose not to split assembly and sublimation departments. Perhaps you'll just call them both assembly. You may also choose not to charge a type setting fee for cub plaques. It's entirely up to you the way you set up and operate your business.

However having define department allocations does allow you to see how profitable areas are. It will show you just how valuable sublimation is in your business or Whether sand blasting sales is covering the cost of the staff in the department etc. Charging for Art type setting ensure that the expensive graphics department gets value out of everything they do and will show you a sales value that you can compare with costs to see just how the Art department contributes to your overall business.

Type Search

Assigning components to a particular type is fantastic for when you need to find something amongst the masses of components you have in your business. Take Ball mounts for example. There are various suppliers of these. When you want to find football mounting options you just have to go to the component list and select by Component Type - Ball Mounts and AwardPro will show you every ball mount from any supplier in one list.

Sam with Polo Shirts or Hi Vis Work Wear. Being able to find by component type saves you time and shows you lists that present best buy opportunities without the leg work.

Another great feature in Customer Type categorisation in the search facility is when Joe Blow rings and need eight glass trophies for tomorrow. You simply go to component list - select by Type - select Glass trophies and sort by the Stock on Hand column which will instantly show you what you have at lease eight of.
